The chakra system
was first mentioned in the Vedas. Amongst them, the Doctrine
of the Three Bodies (Sarir Traya) describes the human form as
consisting of 3 bodies: a gross body, a subtle body, and a causal
body. Communication among the three is accomplished through
a network of nadis and chakras. Today, chakras refer to the
7 main chakras of the subtle body, which are located along the
spinal column. The lotus flower is used to symbolize these 7
chakras; each is distinguished by the number of petals they
contain. Though colors are used within in the symbols, no color
is attributed to the chakras themselves. The Theosophist C.
W. Leadbetter was the first to say there is a color association:
“Chakras have been seen and described by clairvoyant investigators
as wheel-like vortices which appear in vivid colors like blazing
coruscating whirlpools.” Christopher Hill, in his book Nuclear
Evolution (1977), claims those colors correspond to the colors
of the spectrum. Since then, books on yoga tend to describe
the chakras in rainbow colors.

According to the
Sutras, yoga is a form of meditation through which the dualistic
thought process of the mind is dissolved. The objective of the
asanas (postures) is for self-realization, for going beyond
the body and mind. As one yogi puts it, to use the yogicsystem
for the improvement of one’s health is the lowest form of application.

These 7 chakra paintings are technical studies. The colors are
based on the popular yoga convention. Several coats of paint
are applied on the canvas first in order to create depth and
resonance to the background. The white wheel is painted on next.
(The use of circles or wheels can be traced back to the Vedas.)
The spikes on the wheels represent the lotus petals found on
the chakra designs. From painting to painting, these wheels
gradually grow in size to show increasing spiritual awareness.
They are also placed at different levels to show the descent
and ascent of spiritual growth. The streaks are painted last.
They reflect the color of the preceding chakra to accentuate
the movement of progression and growth.

| They should to
be attached together with 3-way folding hinges so they can fold
like an accordion. It would give this series four movements:
the descent and ascent of the white circles, the increasing
size of the white circles, the streaking indicating the transfer
from one color to the next, and the paintings standing up in
a zigzag fashion. The back and forth movement in the folds is
to suggest that even though the spirit is “on the path” there
are advances and setbacks. |

| Universal Consciousness
is a metaphysical concept defined as the single reality in which
all countless forms of existence reside. It is the underlying
source of awareness and knowledge of the mind. Though Universal
Consciousness pervades everything, we are unaware of this interconnectedness.
Universal Consciousness may be aware of us, but we are not aware
of it −− we like to think of ourselves as separate entities
in this world. |
