Studies in Green further explores oils in green and and painting techniques.
Siuslaw River is painted realistically, whereas Whittaker Creek I
emulates the style of Les Nabis. Highland Park is somewhat like Rousseau's
naive style, but without animals peeking out from bushes and trees.
Cezanne's style of slashing strokes is used in the paintings Whittaker
Creek II, Contemplation, and Alert, to evoke the impression of light
flickering through the foliage. Green Emergent, painted in the Color
Fields style attempts to capture what the Japanese call "new
green," the green of emerging new leaves in the spring.
