Rivers
of Tokyo
Water. On the
physical level, water sustains life. It is the thread that
connects all living things together. Spiritually, water is
a path to freedom. It symbolizes impermanence, deliverance,
and salvation. The Rivers of Tokyo series is an artistic exploration
on the imagery of water.
Tokyo is built around the confluences of several rivers, large
and small. We often think of Tokyo as a metropolis, crowded
with tall buildings. Yet these rivers are everywhere, twisting
and turning within the concrete jungle. Some have their sources
well into the country. Were we to follow these from city center
out we would discover another side of Tokyo.
Only 5 rivers are considered for this project: Kanda River,
Meguro River, Shibuya River, Sumida River, and Zenpukuji River.
A separate color palette* is used to give each river its own
distinction. The challenge in this project is to technically
convey the various moods of the rivers: placid, glittering
in sunlight, shimmering amid shadow and light, and powerful.
Perhaps some of the paintings are more successful than others.
Nevertheless, I hope you will enjoy them all.
