Impressions
from the Daily Yomiuri

In 2002,
I saw "War Photographer" (2001), a documentary about James
Natchwey, who justified his work with the following memorable lines:
It
has occurred to me that if everyone could be there just once
to see for themselves what white phosphorous does to the face
of a child, or what unspeakable pain is caused by the impact
of a single bullet, or how a jagged piece of shrapnel can rip
someone's leg off--if everyone could be there to see for themselves
the fear and the grief, just one time, then they would understand
that nothing is worth letting things get to the point where
that happens to even one person, let alone thousands. But everyone
cannot be there, and that is why photographers go there, to
show them, to reach out and grab them and make them stop what
they are doing and pay attention to what is going on, to create
pictures powerful enough to overcome the diluting effects of
the mass media and shake people out of their indifference, to
protest, and by the strength of that protest to make others
protest. |

This project is an artistic response to Natchwey's "if everyone
could be there just once...." During the past 5 years, I have
collected a number of news photographs from the Daily Yomiuri which
had a powerful impact on me. I hope I have captured the essence of
those feelings in the paintings that grew out of these "Impressions
from the Daily Yomiuri." And in doing so, I too will have been
there, and have seen what the men and women who took these photographs
have seen.

The paintings
are divided into 3 subcategories: Conflict and Strife, Loss, and Prayer.
Some of the images in first subcategory are grim. Three paintings
in the second subcategory are of children. They were the most painful
to paint. Among the paintings in the final subcategory are several
which were a pleasure to paint because they deal with hope. As the
majority of paintings here reflect man's inhumanity towards man, hope
is an uplifting counterpoint to all this pain.

The last
painting, "War Photographers," does not belong to any of
the three subcategories, but it is a fitting way to end this series.
