Hearts
of Flowers
The inspiration for the title of this project comes from the gesture
of a spiritual teacher who held one hand in a fist next to his heart,
then open it as he extended his hand out, to indicate that his heart
was open. These paintings attempt to draw your attention to the center,
or the "heart," of the flowers.
Several considerations were taken in setting up this project. The
subject, flowers, is used as a means to explore design and color.
Ideally, the composition should be free-floating, so that each canvas
can be hung on any side without jeopardizing the integrity of the
painting. The lines of the petals guide the viewer's eyes to the petals
to the "heart" of the flower. The colors are coordinated
so that all 20 canvasses can be hung in any configuration without
jeopardizing the harmony of the group. Hopefully, these factors will
elevate the subject matter, from straightforward representation (mimesis)
into something more sublime. To this end, descriptive titles are not
used.
You are invited to look at each painting without preconceptions.

花の心−芯
この企画のタイトルは、あるスピリチュアルの教師について読んだことから着想したものです。その教師は胸のところで片手を握りしめ、次にその手を振り出しながら開いて自分の心が開いていることを示すのです。これらの絵が皆さんの関心を花の中心、つまり「心−芯」へと向けることを願っています。
この企画を立てる際にいくつかのことを考えました。画題の花はデザインと色彩を研究する手段として用いられます。欲を言えば、それぞれの絵はどの辺を上に架けられても絵の統一性を損なわいようなかたちで、自由に浮かんでいるようにするのが理想です。絵を見る人の目は一つの焦点、花の「心−芯」に導かれます。20枚のカンヴァス全部がどのように配置されても全体のハーモニーを損なわないように、色彩のコーディネートに気を配りました。最終的に望むのは、これらのファクターが花という主題をより高次なものへと高めること、直接的な描写（ミメーシス）から、それよりも崇高な何かへと高めることです。そのために、説明的なタイトルは用いません。
