Explosion of Time [Painting]
Explosion
of Time is an abstract expression of the Chinese taijitu
(太極圖, 太極図). In Zhou Dunyi's (周敦頤) diagram, from nothingness
comes action and stillness, the yin and the yang. Out
of this dichotomy of movement come the 5 energetic elements
(五行). Each energetic element is associated with a color.
The Chinese base all other theoretical constructs on these
five elements, like the seasons, herbal treatment, the
human body, and the I Ching. For example green is associated
with the season spring, and the human organ liver, and
the area of health in Feng Shui. Red is associated with
the season summer, the heart, and social life in Feng
Shui. Yellow is associated with Indian summer, the spleen,
and good fortune in Feng Shui. White is associated with
autumn, the lungs, and creativity in Feng Shui. And black
is associated with winter, the kidneys and career in Feng
Shui.
Though the seasons start with spring, qigong exercises
always begin with the lungs (autumn, white) because man
begins life with his first breath. In this painting, from
the lungs (the white spot) comes an explosion of all the
other colors.. and the start of time, life.
Clearly mankind had no input in the Big Bang (if that
is how the universe came to be), but it looks like man
will at least have the decision whether to destroy himself
(and possibly all life on earth). |

The Four Horsemen [Painting]
Here, the
Four Horsemen are symbolic of the coming of the Europeans
and Americans and their impact on the rest of the world.
The composition is based on the Chinese placement of the
cosmic animals. The white horseman, like the white tiger,
faces west, the red horseman, like the vermillion bird,
faces south, the black horsemen, like the black warrior,
faces north, and rising from the east like the Azure Dragon
is the pale horseman.
The white horseman represents conquest and greed; one
can say it symbolizes the rise of the West. The red horseman
represents invasion and war, like the Spaniards' conquest
of the Aztecs and the Incas. The black horseman signifies
disease and famine which was what the colonists brought
to the North American Indians. The Pale Horseman personifies
death.
If we do not take care of the problems man has created
on earth, death will ensue.

Poseidon's Ire [Painting]
This painting
is my response to the horrific collections of garbage
in the Pacific Ocean. The 2 principal garbage patches
are the Western Garbage Patch (located near Japan) and
the Eastern Garbage Patch (located between the U.S. states
of Hawaii and California). These patches are almost entirely
made up of tiny bits of plastic (micro-plastics) which
can’t always be seen by the naked eye, giving the water
a cloudy soup-like appearance. This soup is intermixed
with larger items, such as fishing gear and shoes. The
mess is terrible, but the destruction to marine life is
much worse.
Poseidon was celebrated as a stallion in Acadian mythology.
Early Greeks absorbed this myth and later claimed that
when Cronus was defeated, the world was divided among
his 3 sons: Zeus was given the sky, Hades, the underworld,
and Poseidon, the sea. They often referred to Poseidon
as “earth-shaker” because they believed earthquakes were
caused by waters eroding the rocks underground. He was
considered the most bad-tempered, moody and vengeful of
the Olympian gods.
In this painting, the red eyes of Poseidon, the horse,
reflects his deep displeasure. The blue-green-eyed dove
attempts to calm him, and the red-eyed vulture hovers
in the left upper corner waiting for dinner. |

Gaia Rising [Painting]
In
Greek mythology, Gaia is ancestral mother of all life,
and the personification of the earth. She was the second
being to have emerged during the creation of the universe.
Titans numbered among her many off-spring with Uranus
(the sky). The Titans in turn fathered Cronus and Rhea
whose children included Zeus, Hades and Poseidon.
This painting represents Hope. I would like to think
that after the Doomsday Clock strikes 12, Gaia will
rise again like a phoenix to bring back all living plants
and animals. Will Gaia give humans a second chance? |

symbolizes the Buddhist idea that everything in life is
nothing more than a succession of appearances and disappearances,
much like ocean waves. The cherry blossoms are painted
slightly out of focus to diminish their importance; the
floating petals lessen the impact of the dark watery shadow,
and the exaggerated bright light reflecting off the water
emphasizes the ephemeral nature of life. In this day and
age, with the passing of time, man will either adapt or
destroy himself. |
