The fundamental
question is how to expand the scope of one’s awareness from
the simple to the higher. Non-dualists say there is no division
between “I” and “other.” Dualism occurs when the things are
viewed as not a part of “I”. “Not I” is what is perceived through
the senses and how the mind interprets, conceptualizes, and
internalizes what is perceived. What we “know” as “not-I” is
not necessary “true.”

According
to Buddhism, there are two aspects to truth: the absolute and
the relative. Absolute Truth (often referred to as Ultimate
Truth) is inherent in the nature of everything. It is "how
things really are." How things "appear" is relative;
it is dictated by the mind's interpretation. The absolute and
the relative are just two aspects of a single reality. This
is the duality.

We are no
longer aware of the absolute because we treat the relative as
the absolute. If we accept that it is our perception that creates
the "other" and that these perceived notions are subject
to change, then we can begin our journey back to awareness of
the absolute.

According
to the Indian philosopher, Jiddu Krishnamurti, before we can
understand duality we must consider how thoughts come about.
Thoughts are an accumulation of knowledge and experiences of
the past. They are contained in our memory. Without memory we
would not be able to assess what we perceive against what we
know or what we experience. Duality exists so long as there
is measurement.

There are
physical and psychological measurements. Physical measurement
is an accumulation of knowledge through quantification, assessment
of data, and scientific testing. It is an objective assessment
of what is observed. Psychological measurement is a mental/internal
measurement of our behavior or performance vis-a-vis an activity,
a person or societal norms. It is subjective. It is how we derive
our sense of self.

and psychological measurements occur over time. If we remove
the time factor, that is, if at the moment of perception we
were to stay in the present moment to the exclusion of all thoughts,
we would perceive without measuring. In other words, if we observe
without conceptualizing, if the mind were to remain still, then
perhaps absolute truth could be perceived. |

Symbolism

the loci of life energy. White here represents Universal Consciousness.
It is fragmented in the form of spirals erupting from the white
sphere. The red spiral (color of the first chakra) circling
out from under the lion cub represents instinct, the primitive
energy of vitality, survival and regeneration. The blue spiral
(color of the fifth chakra) of the young monk marks the beginning
of a search for self-expression, creativity and connection with
the spiritual. Krishnamurti floating from a purple arc (color
of the seventh chakra), signifies the self's attempt to reconnect
with Universal Consciousness. The spiral above Krishnamurti
represents all the seekers of Universal Consciousness.
