Red Wolf
38.0 x 45.5 cm. (14.9 x 17.9in.)

The red wolf, also known as Florida wolf and Mississippi Valley wolf, originally existed from the Atlantic Ocean to central Texas, and from the Ohio River Valley, N Pennsylvania, S New York to the Gulf of Mexico. It was driven to near extinction in the mid-1960s by an aggressive predator control program, by habitat destruction, and an extensive hybridization with coyotes. It was declared extinct in 1980. The declaration allowed breeding in captivity for experimental relocation to take place. In 1987 captive animals were released in N Carolina, and in Great Smoky Mt. National Park in 1989.

This filament produced by an energetic Coronal Mass Ejection (CME), held up for days by the Sun’s ever-changing magnetic field, was unexpected. The electrons and ions shot into the Solar System by the explosion caused visible aurora on earth 3 days later.
