Sumatran Tiger
38.0 x 45.5 cm. (14.9 x 17.9in.)

The Sumatran tiger inhabiting the Indonesian island of Sumatra is a rare tiger subspecies. It is the only surviving member of the big cats on the Sunda Islands where the Bali tiger and the Java tiger are now extinct. The stripes are thick and tend to disintegrate into spots near their ends. Lines of small dark specks between regular stripes may be found on the back, flanks and hind legs. Major threats come from loss of habitat due to palm oil and acacia plantation expansion, depletion of prey, and illegal trade.

Cat’s Paw Nebula (NGC 6334), sometimes called Bear Claw Nebula, is an emission nebula. The red color comes of ionized hydrogen atoms. Stars born in this nebula have nearly 10 times the mass of our Sun.
