Galapagos Penguin
38.0 x 45.5 cm. (14.9 x 17.9in.)

This penguin, endemic to the Galapagos Islands, is the only penguin living in the wild north of the equator. Cool temperatures from the Humboldt and the Cromwell Currents contribute to its survival. On land, it is preyed upon by crabs, snakes, rice rats, cats, hawks, and owls; in the sea, it is attacked by sharks, fur seals and sea lions. It is subjected to unreliable food sources, volcanic activities and illegal fishing disrupting its habitat.

NGC 2440 is a planetary nebula containing a newborn white dwarf star. This star is the hottest white dwarf star known to date. A shell of gas and dust surrounds it.
