Red Panda
38.0 x 45.5 cm. (14.9 x 17.9in.)

The red panda is often referred to as the lesser panda, the red bear-cat, and the red cat-bear. It is an arboreal mammal native to the E Himalayas and SW China. Threats come from fragmentation (which may lead to inbreeding and decrease of genetic diversity), cutting down of trees, competition from domestic livestock, deforestation, and poaching. Its tail is highly prized in SW China.

The giant dust pillars (fairy pillars) of Greater Eagle Nebula (M16) are evaporating dust sculptures. The cool cosmic mountains are being whittled away by powerful starlights. The nebula is actually a giant evaporating shell of gas and dust inside a glowing cavity filled with stellar nurseries.
