There
are only 2 surviving species of camels, the dromedary (one-humped
camel) of the Middle East and Horn of Africa and the bactrian (two-humped
camel) of Central Asia. Both are domesticated for their milk, meat,
hair and transportation. Wild bactrian camels are critically endangered,
estimated to number about 800 living in the remote regions of the
Gobi and the Taklamakan Deserts of Mongolia and China. A small number
still roam in Mangystau Province of SW Kazakhstan and the Kashmir
Valley. Feral herds can also be found in Australia. Threats come from
increasingly dry conditions, habitat loss due to mining and industrial
complex development, and domestic stock competing for food and water.
The tides of matter, sheets of shocked gas, lanes of dark dust, and
streams of cast-away stars come from the spiral galaxy slowing being
pulled apart by IC 2163. |
