African Wild Ass 38.0 x 45.5 cm. (14.9 x 17.9in.) The African wild ass is found in deserts and arid areas of the Horn of Africa, Eritrea, Ethiopia and Somalia. While ass species are abundant, the wild species is critically endangered. There are only a few hundred animals left in the wild. They are hunted for food and for traditional medicine. The competition for grazing area and water with domestic livestock further exacerbates their plight.
