St. Edmund, King and Martyr

This medieval church was destroyed in the Great Fire of 1666. Sir Christopher Wren designed the tower like a lighthouse (1670-79).

Edmund, King of East Anglia, was captured by the Danish Great Heathen Army; he refused to renounce Christ and died the death of a Christian martyr.
